What Is a Print Engine?
A print engine is a label printer without the housing, roll holder and other parts a desktop or tabletop printer has. It's built to be mounted inside a print and apply label applicator, which feeds it labels, takes away the liner and puts each printed label on a product automatically. How Do You Know Which Zebra ZE521 Is Right for You?
Every Zebra ZE521 shares the same core specs. What changes from one part number to the next is how it's configured. These are the choices to make:
- Left-hand or right-hand: this is the one you can't get wrong. The orientation has to match your applicator and the direction your line runs. If you're replacing an engine, match the one you have. If you're not sure, ask us or your applicator maker before you order.
- Print resolution (dpi): 203 dpi is the fastest and suits most pallet and carton barcodes. 300 dpi gives sharper small text and denser barcodes.
- Connectivity: USB, serial, Ethernet and Bluetooth come standard, along with the applicator interface. Wi-Fi is available as an option.
- RFID: the ZE521 can be fitted with a UHF RFID encoder, for printing and encoding RFID labels on the line.
- Do you need the width? The ZE521 takes labels from 3 in. to 7.1 in. wide. If your labels are 4 in. wide or less, the Zebra ZE511 is the 4-inch version. It's smaller, prints faster and adds a 600 dpi option.

Ribbons, Printheads and Supplies for the Zebra ZE521
- Zebra ZE521 ribbon: the engine takes ribbons on a 1 in. core, up to 1,970 ft. long and 7.1 in. wide. That's a longer roll than a tabletop printer uses, which means fewer line stops. Shop Zebra ribbons.
